ADIDAS DERBY FESTIVAL BASKETBALL CLASSIC RECAP
Kansas signee Travis Releford (6’ 5”) scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Black team to a 128-121 win over the Gold team in the 32nd Annual Adidas Derby Festival Basketball Classic at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Kentucky. Over10,000 fans were in attendance for the event.
Yancy Gates (6’ 9”) led the Gold team with 19 points and 10 rebounds. The standout from Withrow High School will stay in the Queen City and play college ball for the Cincinnati Bearcats. Releford and Gates were named Most Valuable Players for their respective squads.
The Black team led 60-55 at intermission, but was tied with the Gold team at thirty after the first 12-minutes, and were deadlocked at 88 at the end of three quarters. Howard Thompkins (6’9”) came off the bench to score 19 points and pull down eight rebounds for the winners. He will stay in his home state and play for Georgia.
Maurice Sutton (6’ 10”), so far uncommitted, scored 17 points for the Black team on seven of 10 shooting and three of three from the foul line. Indiana “Mr. Basketball” and North Carolina signee Tyler Zeller (7’ 0”) scored 15 points and blocked three shots.
Ray Shipman (6’ 5”), a Florida signee scored 18 points on 7 of 14 from the field, including four of six from three-point range. Lefty Luke Babbitt (6’ 8”), a Nevada signee, scored 14 for the Gold team, making both of his three-point shots and foul shots.
Kentucky signees Darius Miller (6’ 6”) and DeAndre Liggins (6’ 5”) scored six and two points, respectively, for the Black team. Miller made four of five shots while Liggins was one of three from the field with three assists.
Louisville signees Terrence Jennings (6’ 10”) had 10 points and eight rebounds and Jared Swopshire (6’ 7”) tallied seven points and five rebounds, playing for the Gold team. Ater Majok (6’ 10”) of Australia, still uncommitted, scored 14 points for the Black team and made six of 10 shots, including both of his three-point attempts. The third uncommitted player in the Classic was Paul McCoy (6’ 0”) of Oregon. He scored four points.
Sutton, Majok and McCoy are considering the University of Kentucky. Gates and Shipman won the two-on-two contest the night before at DeVry University and Zeller won the Three-point contest at halftime, scoring 16 out of a possible 25. Jennings nosed-out Swopshire, his future Cardinal teammate, in the Dunk contest that was forced into extra rounds after the two received perfect scores from the judges.
